Once the top of the groundwater table has been reached, a Geoprobe", push driven
water sampling device will be advanced 2 to 3 feet into the water bearing zone. The water
sampling device consists of a steel inner core well screen nested inside a steel outer sampling
sheath. The sampler is kept sealed while being driven to the desired sampling depth. At the
desired sampling depth, the outer sheath of the sampler is pulled up approximately 2 feet
exposing the inner core steel well screen. A groundwater sample will be extracted by lowering
a stainless steel bailer through the hollow center of the push rods into the screen section. In
addition, a groundwater sample may be collected through a teflon or vinyl tube inserted through
the push rods, and drawing the sample to the surface using a peristaltic pump. Groundwater
samples will be filtered in the field through a 0.45 micron filter and collected in pre-preserved
500-ml polyethylene containers supplied by the laboratory. Following collection, samples will
be labelled, and placed in a cooled ice chest. The time, date, location, and sample
identification number will be recorded on the chain-of-custody.
Following sample collection, sample labels will be affixed to the sample containers with
the following information: sample number, depth, date, collector name, owner, location, job
number, and time of collection. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in
cooled ice chests. The ice chests will also serve as containers for delivering samples to the
analytical laboratory. Chain-of-custody records will be maintained using standard forms, and
i
routed to the analytical laboratory with the sealed ice chests containing the samples.
4.3 ABANDONMENT
All soil borings will be permanently sealed to prevent vertical migration of contaminants.
Soil borings shall be abandoned by backfilling, from bottom to the surface, with Holeplug'',
EnviroplugTM', Volclaym, or a cement-bentonite grout slurry. Boreholes that extend below the
water table can be poured from the surface.
r
4.4 DECONTAMINATION
All downhole equipment and tools will be cleaned between borings to prevent cross-
contamination into the next boring. After each use, continuous core barrels, soil samplers, and
groundwater sampling probes will be scrubbed using a brush and non-phosphate cleaner, rinsed
with potable water, and final rinsed with de-ionized water. All decontamination rinsate will be
discharged to the ground.
SAC 187.14 6
