From the time samples are collected until the issuing of the analytical laboratory results,
the samples will be in the custody of the laboratory or Dames & Moore personnel, or a bonded
courier. In order to maintain chain of custody, the samples must be:
• In sight of the assigned custodian;
• Locked in a tamper-proof location; or
• Sealed with a tamper-proof seal.
A written record of sample possession and transference will be maintained, as
documented on the chain of custody record. The chain of custody record will be signed with
the date and time for the following activities:
• Whenever the sample container (ice chest) is opened for any reason during
shipping, the record must be signed and seal number noted;
• The record must be signed each time the sample container is transferred to the
responsibility of another person; and
• The custody record must be signed and enclosed within the sample container
when it is sealed for transport to the laboratory.
SAC187.14 8
