CAUTION:This email is originated from outside of the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the
sender and know the content is safe.
Good afternoon Naseem;
Thank you for your insight on determining wastewater flow volumes when designing an OWTS. As we
discussed, Section 6 of the SJC OWTS Standards references Table 6.6 - Water Use Computation. As noted,
these flow volumes were based on old fixture standards. For example, old style toilets were five gallons per
flush. From this flow volume, you can see how Table 6 was derived. The new California Title 20 Water
Efficiency Standards state that toilets must have a maximum water use of 1.28 gallons per flush.
Regarding the Delta Charter Schools project, on Page 7 of my Report, I extrapolated an Average Daily Flow by
using a "worst-case scenario" of having all 21 toilets flushed on average every five minutes, over an eight hour
day. I assigned 1.5 gallons per flush and 0.5 gallons for hand washing. These flow volumes incorporate
additional water use. For example, using one-half gallon for hand washing could be considered excessive.
From the calculations, I believe the Average Daily Flow volume of 4,032 gpd is a logically anticipated
wastewater volume, and therefore can be used accordingly in the OWTS design parameters.
Thank you,
Don
Chesney Consulting
Don Chesney, PE, CCA/PCA
Civil Engineer/Environmental Agronomist
P.O.Box 3794
Turlock,CA 95381
209.402.1652(C)
2
