The investigation was performed following the
discovery of petroleum hydrocarbons during a natural gas condensate valve
excavation at the McDonald Island Compressor Station. The work plan and well
permit for the assessment was approved by the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department (EHD), (Mr. Harlen Knoll).
Work activities consisted of:
• Collection of soil samples from seven borings located in the excavation
area
• Conversion of the borings to temporary monitoring wells for collection of
groundwater samples
• Analysis of soil and groundwater samples for petroleum hydrocarbons
and selected other constituents
• Evaluation of data and preparation of a report
The work plan and final report of this assessment are both enclosed. The results
of the investigation indicated traces of toluene present in about half of the soil
samples, ranging from 0.005 to 0.043 mg/kg. Analysis of groundwater samples
showed that ethylbenzene and xylenes were present in concentrations ranging
from 1.2 to 4.5 ug/l. Benzene was not detected in any of the groundwater
samples (RPL < 0.5 ug/1). The concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons were all
well below the maximum contaminant levels for domestic water.
The soil and groundwater assessment report was submitted to the San Joaquin
County EHD in the Fall of 2002. We have asked the county to issue a letter of
"no further action" regarding this assessment. However Mr. Knowles deferred
any closure decisions to the CVRWQCB.
