ACTION GUIDE#5—ARSENIC EXPOSURE WITH FIRE <br /> GENERAL DESCRIPTION <br /> Arsenic Filter Cake Cas#7440-38-2 540 cu.ft. <br /> LAWTF generates sludge bi-product containing arsenic. Arsenic, typically, is a grey metallic <br /> powder or chunk solid that turns black on exposure to air and insoluble in water. <br /> CAUTION: <br /> • Irritating to eyes and skin. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of <br /> water and seek medical advice. <br /> • Do not eat, drink or smoke during exposure. <br /> • Toxic by ingestion. <br /> • Poisonous by inhalation of dust or by ingestion. Regardless of exposure route, symptoms <br /> in most cases are characteristic of severe gastritis or gastroenteritis. All chemical forms <br /> of Arsenic eventually produce similar toxic effects. Symptoms may be delayed. <br /> • Incompatible with acids, oxidizing agents, halogens. Heat and air-sensitive. <br /> • Dangerous for the environment. <br /> DO NOTATTEMPTTO EXTINGUISH A FIRE IF THE FUEL SOURCE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF FIRST—FLARE <br /> UP COULD OCCUR <br /> WARNING <br /> GIVES OFF IRRITATING OR TOXIC FUMES (OR GASES) IN A FIRE <br /> INDICATIONS: <br /> • Visible sludge on ground surrounding bin and/or facility. <br /> • Strong odors, stinging eyes and/or irritating skin. <br /> IF QUALIFIED THE FIRST RESPONDER SHOULD FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE (Note that Fires <br /> beyond the beginning stages are not candidates for simple firefighting techniques and <br /> portable fire extinguishers. You are responsible for doing the following) <br /> Bins/Containers: <br /> 1. Contact 9-1-1 or the fire department. <br /> 2. Do not approach smoldering bin/containers, nor attempt to put out a bin/container on <br /> fire. <br /> 3. Secure the area from public access. <br /> 4. Notify Emergency Coordinator or other personnel on site. <br /> 5. Stand by to lend assistance. <br /> Guidelines for Portable Fire Extinguisher Use: <br /> 1. Call 9-1-1. Shut off the fuel source. <br /> 2. Make sure the public is safe. Isolate and deny access to the area. <br />
