ACTION GUIDE#5—ARSENIC EXPOSURE WITH FIRE GENERAL DESCRIPTION Arsenic Filter Cake Cas#7440-38-2 540 cu.ft. LAWTF generates sludge bi-product containing arsenic. Arsenic, typically, is a grey metallic powder or chunk solid that turns black on exposure to air and insoluble in water. CAUTION: • Irritating to eyes and skin. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. • Do not eat, drink or smoke during exposure. • Toxic by ingestion. • Poisonous by inhalation of dust or by ingestion. Regardless of exposure route, symptoms in most cases are characteristic of severe gastritis or gastroenteritis. All chemical forms of Arsenic eventually produce similar toxic effects. Symptoms may be delayed. • Incompatible with acids, oxidizing agents, halogens. Heat and air-sensitive. • Dangerous for the environment. DO NOTATTEMPTTO EXTINGUISH A FIRE IF THE FUEL SOURCE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF FIRST—FLARE UP COULD OCCUR WARNING GIVES OFF IRRITATING OR TOXIC FUMES (OR GASES) IN A FIRE INDICATIONS: • Visible sludge on ground surrounding bin and/or facility. • Strong odors, stinging eyes and/or irritating skin. IF QUALIFIED THE FIRST RESPONDER SHOULD FOLLOW THIS SEQUENCE (Note that Fires beyond the beginning stages are not candidates for simple firefighting techniques and portable fire extinguishers. You are responsible for doing the following) Bins/Containers: 1. Contact 9-1-1 or the fire department. 2. Do not approach smoldering bin/containers, nor attempt to put out a bin/container on fire. 3. Secure the area from public access. 4. Notify Emergency Coordinator or other personnel on site. 5. Stand by to lend assistance. Guidelines for Portable Fire Extinguisher Use: 1. Call 9-1-1. Shut off the fuel source. 2. Make sure the public is safe. Isolate and deny access to the area.
