Jim Tjosvold
Page 9
July 3 , 1987
Samples for analysis by EPA method 602 should be
preserved by adjusting to a pH less than 2 with
50% hydrochloric acid.
Information for preserving chlorinated phenols with KOH
must be provided.
The pH for preserving metal samples and hold times has
not been provided.
It is incorrect to preserve nitrosoamines with nitric
acid. Proper preservatives, containers, and hold times
must be stated.
53 . We question the size for soil sample containers. Minimum
container volumes (weights) for all analyses must be
defined. Samples for the various analyses should be
divided into separate containers in the field to
eliminate any cross contamination in the laboratory.
54 . The State does riot accept the statement that soil
detection limits cannot be stated because of
interferences. The best achievable limits must be listed
for each compound of interest. Deviations from these
levels based on matrix effects must be explained at the
time of issuing the report.
55 . To reduce any possibility of confusion over the use of
TSP for cleaning sampling equipment, all soil sampling
equipment should also use a non-phosphate detergent.
56 . Soil samples at the ground s-irface should be of the first
six inches of depth. The subsequent samples down through
the soil profile should continue from the six inch depth.
57 . The State requests to be notified prior to sample
disposal .
58 . There is no statement in this workplan for providing
analysis through a referee laboratory. It was requested
by our last comments (3-18-87) to reactivate the
laboratory fund. We understand that there is
approximately $8, 300 left in this fund and the State can
arrange for the fund's use and split selection through
Randy Peterson of CH2M Hill .
59. Regarding laboratory quality assurance, method blanks,
duplicates, and spikes must be analyzed a minimum of once
for every batch of samples or type of matrix or 20
samples, whichever is more frequent.
60. The work schedule provides for expedient results on many
tasks. The Department finds this schedule to be
