Schmit, J. Henley <br /> History and Problem: <br /> This site is one of four, operated by Brea Ag Services, Inc. , in San Joaquin _ <br /> County. The property was originally owned by-Hughes Spray Chemical (a pesticide <br /> and fertilizer application firm) until Brea acquired it in 1981. <br /> -There -is an-unlined evaporation pond -on site located in the northwest portion of the ' <br /> - to ri- <br /> property. The pend was installed eight to ten years ago, although there is <br /> ffrom <br /> able documentation of this. Currently, the pond only receives rain water r <br /> the plant yard. However, there is no information regarding the use of the pond prior <br /> to Brea Ag's purchase of the property. <br /> 9-8-82) the pond was dry with slightly moist areas <br /> Upon inspection (see report dated <br /> in the lowest locations. Vegetation in the area appeared stressed (see photos in <br /> file) . Samples were obtained from five separate positions and analyzed for pesti- <br /> cide contamination (chlorinated pesticides and chldrinated hydrocarbons) and pH. <br /> Of the samples taken, two contained 4,4-DDT in total concentrations of 7.4 ppm and <br /> 1.2 ppm. A third sample contained both 4,4-DDT and 4,4-DDE with total concentrations <br /> of .6 ppm and .4 ppm respectively. pH ran from 2.39 to 5.92, at 50% dilution. <br /> Proposed Action: - <br /> The Abandoned Site Project is referring this site to HWMB enforcement for further <br /> action. We suggest a more thorough sampling of the ponds as samples obtained were <br /> "grab samples" only.- Contamination may be much deeper .in the soil and could possib- <br /> ly reach groundwater. Wells in the area should also be tested for contaminants. <br /> 4; <br />
