F FAMILY — ENVIRONMENTAL <br /> Storm Water Treatment Devices <br /> Environmental Concerns <br /> Discharge of the following materials into the storm <br /> water drainage system or watercourse: <br /> • Fuel - • Sediment <br /> + Non-storm water • Trash <br /> Oil • Vehicle fluids <br /> DEFINITION AND Storm water treatment devices are measures or structures installed <br /> PURPOSE primarily to reduce storm water pollutants and improve water duality. The <br /> devices include vegetated treatment systems, infiltration basins and <br /> detention devices. <br /> APPROPRIATE Storni water treatment devices are planned, designed and installed through <br /> '-� APPLICATION the Caltrans new construction, major reconstruction and retrofit project <br /> delivery process where a storm drain system discharges directly or <br /> indirectly to surface water. The devices are maintained in accordance with <br /> the procedures specified in the Storm Water Quality Practice Guidelines. <br /> OPERATIONAL e Limit the entrance/exit points to the activity site and stabilized against <br /> PROCEDURES erosion. <br /> • Avoid stockpiling contaminated soil or sediment and dispose of <br /> properly. <br /> • If clean sediment cannot be recycled, transport the material back to the <br /> Maintenance facility or an approved storage site. <br /> • Remove gravel and sediment from tires before reentering the highway. <br /> • See operation and maintenance procedures in Vegetated Treatment <br /> Systems (Biofiltration Swales and Strips)BMP. <br /> + See operation and maintenance procedures in Detention Device BMP. <br /> • See operation and maintenance procedures in-Infiltration Basins BMP. <br /> 1 <br /> Caltrans Storm Water Quality Landbook B-48 <br /> Maintenance Siff Guide <br /> May 2003 <br />
