INFORMATION SHEET
CORRAL HOLLOW SANITARY LANDFILL
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
The Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill is a closed, Class III,municipal solid waste landfill
in San Joaquin County. It is adjacent to Corral Hollow Creek and Interstate 580,
approximately 5 miles south of Tracy.
The site consists of 57.71 acres, of which 42.79 were permitted for landfilling. The
remaining acreage is comprised of access roads, storm water detention ponds, and
setbacks for environmental monitoring and fire-breaks. The site is comprised of
Assessor's Parcel Numbers 253-030-05, 253-030-06, 253-030-07 and portions of 253-
030-02 in Section 18, T3S, R5E,Mount Diablo Base and Meridian. The landfill is
owned and operated by the County of San Joaquin.
The county is installing a landfill gas collection system because high emissions of
methane have been noted along the northwest perimeter of the landfill. The county has
also demonstrated that the landfill gas contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that
may have contributed to the VOC impacts noted in shallow groundwater monitoring well
MW-5. The county has proposed operation of the landfill gas collection system as a
corrective action for the VOC impact.
The shallow aquifer is approximately 70 feet below grade but has only been encountered
along the northeastern side of the landfill. A deeper aquifer, encountered at
approximately 320 feet below grade is also present, however, three monitoring wells
within this flow zone have been dry since 1991.
These WDRs contain post-closure monitoring requirements including evaluation of the
landfill gas collection system as a corrective action measure for the shallow groundwater,
and a requirement for the county to propose additional subsurface monitoring for the
southwestern half of the landfill.
WWA/:13 April 2001
