GRANITE CONSTRUCTION 2098357633 06124/02 01:09pm P. 005
KLEINFELDER
workplan to include comments by PHS/EHD in a document titled "Revised Workplan/Cost
Estimate, Limited Soil Sampling and Analyses, Bunt Material Stockpile, Granite Construction,
Tracy Facility, Tracy, California", dated June 28, 2001. The following is Kleinfelder's findings
based on our scope of work to address the county's concerns.
2.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
On July 26, 2001, Mr. Lou Smith, Kleinfelder Staff Geologist, collected eight discrete samples
from two burn material stockpiles with an estimated volume of 75-cubic yards. The stockpiles
are located on leased property adjacent and southwest of the California Aqueduct and the Granite
Tracy facility. The leased property is bordered by Interstate 580, the California Aqueduct, Tracy
Boulevard and Corral Hollow Road, in Tracy, California. The stockpiles were comprised of
mostly glass(estimated 75% glass), and sediment(25 %)with some wood and metal debris. The
glass was both broken and melted and was noted to be several different colors including blue,
green and yellow. Clear bottles were also noted.
The eight discrete soil samples were collected from approximately equal volumes of the two
stockpiles at depths ranging from one to two feet below the surface or sides of the stockpile. The
samples were obtained in a 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long stainless steel tube. The stainless
steel tube was then sealed with Teflon° sheeting and plastic end caps. The samples were
labeled, and placed in an iced cooler pending transportation to the analytical laboratory under
chain of custody protocols. The sampling equipment and tubes were decontaminated between
sample locations with a laboratory-grade detergent/water wash and distilled water rinse.
The samples were transported under chain-of-custody control to Sequoia Analytical of
Sacramento, California (Sequoia) for chemical analysis. Sequoia is certified by the California
Department of Health Services to perform the requested analyses.
3.0 LABORATORY ANALYSIS
The eight discrete soil samples were composited by Sequoia into two four-point composite
sample and analyzed for the following:
• pH by EPA Method 9040
• Total Threshold Limit Concentrations (TTLCs) of California Assessment Manual (CAM-
17) metals by EPA Methods
• Benzene,Toluene, Ethylbenzene,Total Xylenes by EPA Method 8020 [BTEX]
• Total Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons as referenced to Diesel [TPH-D] by EPA
Method 8015M/3015
• Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as referenced to Gasoline [TPH-G] by EPA Method
8015M
• Semi-Volatile Organics by EPA Method 8270
20-1108-33.001/2011 RI 188 Page 2 of 7
0 2001,Kleinfelder,Inc.
