i
CORRAL HOLLOW SANITARY LANDFILL LFG MIGRATION MONITORING
Landfill Location
The Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill is located on Corral Hollow Road, approximately five miles
south of Tracy, California(Figure 1). The site is a Class III landfill which stopped accepting
waste in May 1995. In accordance with closure regulations, a network of seven perimeter gas
monitoring wells was installed by SCS Engineers (Figure 2).
Monitoring System and Equipment
The seven wells were monitored for methane on March 13, 2002,by SCS Field Services. SCS
used a Landtec GEM 500 Gas Extraction Monitoring Instrument which was calibrated prior to
the sampling event. The Landtec GEM 500 is capable of measuring methane, carbon dioxide,
oxygen, and nitrogen(balance gas) concentrations.
Results
The landfill gas monitoring results from the Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill indicates that
combustible gas in excess of the regulatory limit is present at 19 of the 20 monitoring probes
(Table 1). The probe at which concentrations exceed regulatory limits (Probe 6-deep) shows
significant and continuing decreases in combustible gas concentration over the last year
(Figure 3). This is a strong indication that LFG is no longer migrating from the site.
Combustible gas continues to be detected in the deep probe because it is captured in the soil,
and is slowly dissipating.
LFG migration is controlled by the operation of a Landfill Gas Collection and Control System
(GCCS) in accordance with the Environmental Health Division, and in compliance with Title 27
CCR.
The County will continue to monitor the probes quarterly to determine the effectiveness of the
GCCS, and will continue to adjust the GCCS to maximize collection efficiency.
Corral Hollow Landfill April 11,2001
San Joaquin County Quarterly LFG Monitoring
