3 <br /> 1 <br /> Fall Prevention: Any same-level means used to reasonable prevent exposure to an elevated fall <br /> { hazard. Floors,walls and guardrails are means of fall prevention. <br /> Fall Protection: What is done to effectively address fall hazards. <br /> Guardrail: A vertical barrier erected along exposed edges of a floor opening,wall opening, <br /> ramp,platform or runway to prevent the fall of persons. <br /> Handrail: A narrow rail for grasping with the hand for support. Also a bar or pipe <br /> supported on brackets from a wall or partition, as on a stairway or ramp, to <br /> fumish persons with a handliold in case of tripping. <br /> Hole: A gap or void 2 inches or more in its least dimension, in a floor, roof or other <br /> walking/working surface. <br /> Ladder Climbing <br /> {Safety)Device: A device or climbing sleeve connected to the front D-ring on the climber's full 3 <br /> body haniess that slides up and down a rigid rail or cable. Should a fall occur, <br /> the device is designed to lock by inertia or cam action to arrest the fall. 1 <br /> Ladder,Fixed: A ladder that cannot be readily moved or carried because it is an integral part of <br /> the building or structure. <br /> Ladder,Job-Built: A ladder that is fabricated by employees, typically at a constriction site. Job- <br /> built ladders can be of either a single or double cleat design with the latter <br /> offering a center rail to allow simultaneous two-way traffic ascending and <br /> descending to a specific access point. <br /> A flexible line of rope, wire roe or strap used to secure the hantess to a <br /> Lanyard: P P P <br /> deceleration device,lifeline or anchorage. <br /> Lifeline: A component consisting of a flexible line for connection to an anchorage at one <br /> end to hang vertically(vertical lifeline), or for connection to anchorages at both <br /> ends to stretch horizontally(horizontal lifeline),and which serves as a means for <br /> coitttecting other components of a personal fall-arrest system to the anchorage. <br /> Opening: A gap or void 30 incites or more high and 18 inches or more wide, in a wall or <br /> partition through which employees cart fall to a lower level. <br /> Personal Fall <br /> Protection System: A system used to arrest an employee in a fall from a working level. It consists <br /> of an anchorage, connectors, body harness, and may include a lanyard, <br /> deceleration device,lifeline or a suitable connbination of these components. <br /> Shock Absorber: A component of a fall protection system that dissipates energy by creating or <br /> extending the deceleration distance. <br />
