_ l <br /> E <br /> WELDING AND CUTTING SAFETY <br /> PROCEDURES <br /> The greatest hazard of welding and burning operations is the possibility of eye injuries. <br /> Ultra-violet radiation is generated during these operations. After exposure to excessive <br /> ultra-violet radiation, eyes may develop sharp pains and/or become red and irritated. <br /> Without proper protection,it is possible to damage eyes permanently. <br /> The following are recommended shades of lenses for various welding and burning <br /> operations: <br /> OPERATION SHADE NUMBER <br /> Soldering 2 <br /> Torch Brazing 3 or 4 <br /> Light Cutting up to one inch 3 or 4 <br /> Medium Cutting,one to six inches 4 or 5 <br /> Heavy Cutting,six inches and over 5 or 6 <br /> Gas Welding(light)up to 1/8 inch 4 or 5 <br /> Gas Welding(mediuin)up to 1/8 to 1/2 inch 5 or 6 <br /> Gas Welding(heavy) 1/2 inch and over 6 or 8 <br /> Shielded Metal-Arc Welding, 1/16 to 5/32 inch electrodes 10 <br /> Inert-Gas Metal-Arc Welding(non-ferrous) 1/16 to 5/32 inch 11 <br /> electrodes <br /> Inert-Gas Metal-Arc Welding(ferrous)1/16 to 5/32 inch electrodes 12 <br /> Shielded Metal-Arc Welding 3/16 to 1/4 inch electrodes 12 <br /> Shielded Metal-Arc Welding 5/16 to 3/8 electrodes 14 <br /> Carbon-Arc Welding 14 <br /> It must be remembered that some plated and/or painted metals can give off harmful filmes <br /> or vapors when subjected to the high temperatures of welding or burning. These filmes or <br /> vapors could cause a health problem if breathed for too long. Welding and burning should <br /> be performed in a well-ventilated area or if working outside, position yourself"up-wind" <br /> from the point of operation. Respiratory Protection may be required - ask your Supervisor <br /> if you have any questions. <br /> When chipping slag,be sure to wear eye protection! <br /> In all welding and burning operations be sure the necessary fire protection and measures <br /> are taken. <br /> Do not store oxygen and acetylene bottles in the same area and protect them fro€n physical <br /> damage. <br /> Specialists in welding and cutting must not only protect themselves from injury but must <br /> also assume a certain responsibility for their helper, their co-worker in other trades,and in <br /> some instances, the public. Accident records indicate that others near arc welding <br /> operations are injured more often than the operator. <br />
