J. H. KLEINFELDER & ASSOCIATES File No. S-2599-1
March 3, 1983
P age 4
the area near Pit No. 2.
No free groundwater was encountered in the pits during this investigation.
However, groundwater conditions could change at some time in the future due to
variations in rainfall, groundwater withdrawal, construction activities, and/or other
factors not apparent at the time our observations were made.
The above is a general summary of the soil conditions encountered in the test
pits made for this investigation. More detailed descriptions of the soils found in each
pit are noted on the logs of test pits, Plates III through VII. All soils have been
classified according to the Unified Soil Classification System, which is described on
Plate U.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
General
From the results of our field explorations, availability of site history, and the
Foundation Engineers' report, we have concluded that the property, except for the
northerly half of Lot 1, would be acceptable for the proposed residential development.
The materials found over the majority of the lots could support conventional
foundations with only a few feet of recompacted material below the footings. The
concern with using conventional foundations is the uncertainty of whether the deposits
as shown in our backhoe pits are representative. Localized deposits with a higher
percentage of organic material could result in differential settlement.
It is important for a development over a landfill of this type to minimize
percolation of water into fill. For this reason it is important that all lots be graded
with a minimum of 1-1/2 percent away from all structures. We recommend that where
swimming pools are considered, they be placed as far as possible, at least 50 feet,
from structures. Where possible, we recommend that the least pervious type of
construction material be used for the swimming pools.
o
