METAL FINISHING SOLUTIONS, INC.
SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Sampling and management of samples will be in accordance with Title 22, California Code of
Regulations, Section 66261.20(c), which references "Test Methods for
Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods", SW -846, 3rd edition, 1986, U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. In addition to the sampling methods in chapter nine of SW -846, the Department will
consider samples obtained using any of the other applicable sampling methods specified in Appendix I of
this chapter to be representative samples.
All samples will be taken with the proper protective clothing and apparatus. Protective clothing will
include at a minimum eye protection and rubber gloves. Samples will be taken only by staff members
or third -party technicians that are trained in the proper sample handling methods.
Both grab and composite samples will be taken as needed. All samples shall provide a true
representation of the material being sampled. If a single grab sample is taken the solution or solid shall
be thoroughly mixed before sampling. If a composite sample is taken equal amounts of material shall be
taken from each area of the sample source. If the composite sample is being taken over time, then the
sampling should be spread evenly over the total time period.
New clean containers will be used for each sample. These sample containers are usually provided by the
testing laboratory. The sample containers will have any required preservative in the bottle. Sample
containers for metal analysis will have 1 ml of nitric acid in the container. Glass vials will be provided for
organic analyses. These vials should be filled completely to prevent any entrapment of air in the vial.
Each sample container will be labeled with the following information:
1. Sample ID
2. Sample date and time
3. Sampler's name
4. Analyses required
5. Preservation (if any)
All samples will be accompanied by a chain -of -custody form that is usually provided by the testing
laboratory. An example chain -of -custody form is attached. The chain -of custody form will be completely
filled out and will remain with the samples until they are delivered to the laboratory for analysis. The
identification of each sample and the samples' required analyses will be clearly listed on the chain -of -
custody form.
All samples will be transferred to the testing laboratory in an ice chest. Sufficient ice will be provided in
the ice chest to maintain the temperature of the samples at 40
Centigrade or less until the samples are delivered to the testing laboratory. All samples will be analyzed
by a testing laboratory that is certified by the State of California.
Each hazardous waste generated at Metal Finishing Solutions, Inc. as shown in Exhibit 1 will be analyzed
1325 EI Pinal Drive Stockton, CA 95205 Tel (209) 798-9328
