• 0
the highest odors mainly due to the freshness of the poultry manure. Once
the composting process continues, odors will be reduced. Site personnel
will assess all wood materials upon receipt, as well as the compost product
for any potential odor problems. Site personnel have been trained to
manage the compostable material in a manner that will minimize the
development of any conditions that could lead to objectionable odors.
AERATION
The method of aeration that is being utilized is the "turned/ churned
method". A pile of compost can be of almost any length. The height of pile
will range from 3 to 4 feet for dense materials with poor structures like
poultry manure. S.K.S.'s compost rows are approximately 3 feet in height,
20 feet in width, and 250 feet in length. Windrow composting consists of
placing the compostable materials in a long narrow pile or windrow which
are then agitated or turned on a regular basis. Every day when new manure
and wood shavings are added the pile is mixed and moves 7 feet. The
windrow is aerated primarily by natural or passive air movement. The rate
of air exchange depends on the porosity of the windrow.
MOISTURE CONTENT OF MATERIALS AND MOISTURE MANAGEMENT
Fresh poultry manure has a moisture content of approximately 75%. This
manure is transported directly from the on-site Honen's to the on-site
composting facility. The purchased wood shavings received are from
Stockton Wood Shaving and consist of virtually no moisture. The lack of
moisture aids in the minimization of odors as well as the composting
process. The desired moisture content in the compost windrow is about
50%.
FEEDSTOCK CHARACTERISTICS AND QUALITY
The feedstock consists of fresh poultry manure and fresh wood shavings.
The poultry manure utilized in the compost is produced fresh daily on-site.
The birds are fed a consistent balanced ration, therefore the poultry manure
will always be of a consistent product. Wood shavings are the only other
product mixed with the poultry manure to produce the compost. Wood
shavings are delivered fresh approximately every two weeks. Wood shavings
are inspected for odors or defects such as mold and/or any other noticeable
visual abnormalities. All loads of wood shavings will be visually checked for
any physical contaminants. Any unacceptable materials will either be
removed or sent back to the destination of origin. If the wood shavings
become contaminated prior to composting, they will be removed and
disposed of in an appropriate manner. The approved and permissible site of
disposal will be selected according to the contaminants and/or unacceptable
i
