i
r CA Distribution Center Training Guide 2016
Hazardous Waste Handling and Processing Procedures
These products become "hazardous waste" when they are damaged or expired, and cannot be
sold, salvaged or used within the Distribution Center. They must be disposed of, but cannot be
thrown in the trash, dumpster or poured down the drain. Instead the waste must be safely
"contained" and stored, then transported for disposal at a permitted hazardous waste disposal
facility.
In managing potentially hazardous product, it is our responsibility to:
• Minimize damages with careful handling of every carton, pallet and product;
• Clean up any resulting spills or damage;
• Safely and effectively process the product as hazardous waste and ensure it is held in a
secure storage container; and,
• Properly execute the hazardous waste program according to government regulations and
company policy.
Keep Incompatible Waste Separate
A critical factor in managing hazardous waste is keeping incompatible chemicals separate to
prevent them from mixing together. Mixing wastes, which is prohibited by law, can result in
safety hazards ranging from toxic vapors to explosions. Our program separates waste into
the following categories:
1. Aerosols, Flammables and Combustibles (AF)
2. Corrosive Acids (C-A)
3. Corrosive Bases (C-B)
4. Universal Waste (UW)
5. State Regulated Waste, Toxics and Over the Counter Pharmaceuticals (STOU)
6. Oxidizers (Ox)
To assist in correctly identifying and categorizing hazardous waste, damaged products are
scanned with the hand-held PDT"gun."Once the UPC is scanned, the PDT will display the correct
hazardous waste category for that item. It will also indicate if an item is non-hazardous or "safe."
Every item MUST be scanned with the PDT to ensure correct waste categorization.
To back-up the PDT, Dollar Tree maintains a product matrix "Products to be Treated as
Hazardous Waste") that identifies products that are considered potentially hazardous. It also
provides the corresponding hazardous waste category for each product type. However, the PDT
should always be considered the primary source for accurate hazardous waste information as
product ingredients and product categories can change.
