3. MAJOR HAZARDOUS WASTE STREAMS
a. State regulated liquids: damaged consumer commodities (e.g., dish soap, laundry
detergent, shampoo, personal care).
b. Corrosive liquids, basic: damaged consumer commodities (e.g., household and multi-
purpose cleaners and wipes).
4. SOURCE REDUCTION MEASURES
In reviewing the five approaches mandated for consideration by SB 14, those best suited for
meeting the needs of the warehouse environment are operational improvements and
administrative steps (e.g., training). The following measures were considered.
a. Ensure that all managers/associates, including the general workforce, receive annual
training on hazardous waste relative to their job responsibilities (Administrative).
b. Implement a communication strategy to keep hazardous waste "top of mind" such as
hazardous product identification posters, and talking points/reminders for shift
meetings (Administrative).
c. Evaluate opportunities to donate useable product (e.g., certain types of recalls, like an
upside-down label) to community organizations instead of disposing of it as waste
(Operational).
d. Reduce waste by minimizing broken, damage and expired materials through enhanced
care in handling, storage precautions and inventory controls (Operational).
5. EVALUATION OF SOURCE REDUCTION MEASURES
a. Refresher training across the organization
1. Change in the amount of hazardous waste:25%decrease in waste generated.
2. Technical feasibility: NA
3. Economic evaluation: Reduction in hazardous waste program/service/supplies costs.
4. Effects on product quality: Less waste generated, more saleable product for stores.
5. Employee health and safety implications: Managing/processing hazardous waste
requires some degree of safety training relative to job responsibilities. PPE required.
6. Compliance schedules:Annual training mandated for certain positions.
7. Releases and discharges: Increase awareness and knowledge, decrease possibility of
release/discharge.
b. Communication strategy: top of mind
1. Change in the amount of hazardous waste:25%decrease in waste generated.
2. Technical feasibility: No issues
3. Economic evaluation: Consider costs of hard copy materials/posters and
replacements. Reduction in hazardous waste program/service/supplies costs.
Source Reduction Plan 2018/2019 pg. 2
