RadNet. <br /> HAZARDOUS MATERIALS BUSINESS PLAN <br /> MRI Manual / Regulatory Affairs <br /> Original Effective Date: April 28, 2021 <br /> • Call 911 for immediate medical attention and have the on-site physician examine the <br /> person promptly, as supplemental oxygen may be required, especially if breathing is <br /> difficult <br /> • If not breathing, administer CPR (if qualified) <br /> For frostbite: <br /> To eyes (generally caused by rapidly evaporating liquid): <br /> • Remove person from the source <br /> • Call 911 and seek immediate medical treatment <br /> • Open eyelids wide to allow the liquid to evaporate <br /> • Flush affected area with copious quantities of cold/lukewarm water for 15 minutes <br /> To skin (generally caused by contact with liquid or metal refrigerated liquid helium or liquid <br /> nitrogen — Note that with nitrogen, the skin can stick to the metal and tear away when pulled): <br /> • Call 911 and seek immediate medical attention, especially if the exposure has resulted in <br /> blistering or deep tissue freezing or a reduction in body temperature <br /> • Remove contaminated clothing carefully to prevent salvageable skin from being pulled off <br /> • Remove clothing that may interfere with circulation of blood to affected area <br /> • Flush with copious quantities of lukewarm water for 15 minutes <br /> • Do not use hot water <br /> • Do not use dry heat <br /> • Do not rub to prevent further damage to the skin <br /> • Do not apply ointments <br /> • Once area has thawed, cover with dry sterile bandages and a large bulky protective <br /> covering until paramedics arrive to help prevent further damage to the area and prevent <br /> infection <br /> • If a large area has been exposed (such that the body temperature is reduced), wrap the <br /> person in blankets and wait for paramedics to arrive <br /> 10 <br />
