Box 1810
Stockton, CA 95201
REi'IEW OF"CORRAL HOLL 0 WSANITARYLANDFILL,SECOND QUARTER 1999,
GROE1IV RATER AX0SURFACE WATER MONITO GREPORT" SANJOAQUIN
COU11'TY(CASEN0. 189)
Regional Board staff has reviewed the Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill, Second Quarter 1999,
Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Report, dated 15 July 1999. As noted during the previous
two quarters, samples from monitoring well MW-5 have detected volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The statistical analyses performed by San Joaquin County this quarter indicate that the one VOC,
perchloroethylene (PCE), has an increasing trend. Other increasing trends for monitoring well MW-5
are noted for electrical conductivity, TDS, and chloride. A decreasing trend is indicated for pH.
During my inspection of the landfill on 8 June 1999, you indicated that landfill gas is currently a
problem that the county will be addressing with a gas extraction system. Your sampling of the landfill
gas has reportedly indicated that VOCs are a component of the landfill gas along the northern boundary
of the landfill. My letters dated 6 April 1999 and 28 May 1999 have already required that San Joaquin
County submit a workplan to evaluate VOCs in groundwater. As stated in the previous letters, the
workplan is due by 30 July 1999. It would be beneficial if this workplan, or its transmittal letter,
includes an update on the status of the planned landfill gas extraction system.
Additionally, it is noted that the well symbols used on Figure 2 indicate that monitoring well MW-3 is a
shallo-w w til and monitoring well MW-5 is a deep well. The text indicates the opposite is true. Please
correct this discrepancy in future reports.
If you have any questions or comments regarding my review, please call me at (916) 255-3140.
WENDY W.
