0
Corral Hollow Landfill 3
San Joaquin County
■ The attached time-series graphs show water quality from MW-4 is very different from SB-1
(upgradient well) and surface water from SW-1 and SW-2 for TDS, sulfate, and nitrate. The
increasing trend in nitrate more closely reflects a steady discharge from the landfill.
If the County wants to continue to monitor the creek as a possible source, we recommend that
additional constituents, common to animal waste,be measured for fingerprinting. Groundwater
should be sampled to determine if it was contaminated from animals, humans, or fertilizer. The
analysis of the groundwater should include fecal coliform, coliform, total nitrate, and delta N15.
Your assessment might include the surveyed land surface of Corral Hollow Creek near MW-4,
slope of the creek, determine how long precipitation flows in the creek(i.e., residence time)in
order to recharge groundwater, describe the hydrologic regime of the creek, and describe how
many cattle graze the watershed.
It would be advantageous to know what types of waste were discharged to the Corral Hollow
Landfall over time. The landfill was not located in a metropolitan area during the active years and
most likely contains agricultural waste(i.e.,nitrogen based fertilizer)rather than municipal waste.
Based upon evidence that inorganic CDCs are increasing in groundwater in MW-4 and MW-5,we
require the County submit, by 1 August 2003, an initial engineering feasibility study, pursuant to
§20420, for a corrective action program necessary to meet the requirements of§20430.
The attached Monitoring Report Compliance Checklist will be included in the case file for Corral
Hollow Sanitary Landfill. Comments should be addressed in subsequent monitoring reports, as
applicable.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at(916)255-3137.
KIM A.
