Geotechnical Engineering Investigation Page 17 of 24
New Residential Subdivision
2706 Pock Lane
Stockton, CA 95205
March 30, 2021 CTE Job # 25-1097G
The structural engineer/architect and slab installation contractor should refer to ACI 302 and ACI
360 for procedures and cautions regarding the use and placement of a vapor barrier. In areas of
exposed concrete, control joints should be saw-cut into the slab after concrete placement in
accordance with ACI Design Manual, Section 302.1R-37 8.3.12 (tooled control joints are not
recommended). To control the width of cracking, continuous slab reinforcement should be
considered in exposed concrete slabs.
5.5 Lateral Load Resistance
Shallow footings may be designed to resist lateral loads using a coefficient of friction of 0.30(total
frictional resistance equals the coefficient of friction times the dead load). A design passive
resistance value of 250 pounds per square foot per foot of depth (with a maximum value of 1250
pounds per square foot) may be used. The allowable lateral resistance can be taken as the sum of
the frictional resistance and the passive resistance, provided the passive resistance does not exceed
two-thirds of the total allowable resistance.
5.6 Retaining Walls
Free draining retaining walls backfilled using generally onsite fill soils per the preceding section
of this report, may be designed using the equivalent fluid weights given in the table below. These
values are also considered suitable for permanent shoring, if proposed.
TABLE 5.6
EQUIVALENT FLUID UNIT WEIGHTS(pounds per cubic foot)
SLOPE BACKFILL
WALL TYPE LEVEL BACKFILL
2:1 (HORIZONTAL:VERTICAL)
CANTLEVERED WALL 40 60
RESTRAINED WALL 60 90
Traffic surcharges on retaining walls should generally be equal to 1/3 of the vertical load of the traffic
located within ten lateral feet of wall. Lateral pressures on cantilever retaining walls(yielding walls)due to
earthquake motions may be calculated based on work by Seed and Whitman(1970). The total lateral thrust
