VAN VLIET VENTURES INC.,
AAA BACKHOE SERVICE
2125 WYLIE DR., SUITE #6
MODESTO, CA 95355
February 17, 2021
RE: Variance Letter Request
Dear San Joaquin County: Environmental Health Services,
On February 16t h , 2021, an inspector of the county reviewed and inspected a septic system
install for 16486 Escalon Be!Iota Rd., Escalon, CA. As per the code of SJC OWTS St. 9.4.8., roughly 25' of
each leach line exceeds the 42" of maximum depth. Generally, in the posterior sections of the leach lines
before the 36" diameter seepage pits.
Hard pan, a distinct soil layer that is largely impervious to water, was greatly present at this
location at 36" in some areas, and even deeper at 48" or more in other areas. The technician and
operator made a judgment call on these depths to guarantee proper function of the leach line by
excavating under the hardpan and into the sandy soil. This action will allow the drain field to work in the
way it was designed. The perforated pipes will be able to filter and breakdown waste while keeping a
proper distance from the well and groundwater at a recorded 84'.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the drain field is a usually a
shallow, covered, excavation made in unsaturated soil. Pretreated wastewater (from the septic tank) is
discharged through piping onto porous surfaces that allow wastewater to filter though the soil. The soil
accepts, treats, and disperses wastewater as it percolates through the soil, ultimately discharging to
groundwater. If the drain field is overloaded with too much liquid, it can flood, causing sewage to flow
to the ground surface or create backups in toilets and sinks. (/) A leach field laid in direct hardpan has
historically caused this incident to occur ultimately forcing the homeowner to pay for more expenses
and repair than necessary.
the owzgAtt...-of 16486 S.
