1.1 PURPOSE
The purpose of this work plan is to present the procedures to install three (3)
Landfill Gas (LFG) extraction wells at Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill (CHSL).
1.2 SITE DESCRIPTION
CHSL is a closed, unlined Class III landfill located at 31130 South Corral Hollow
Road, in southern San Joaquin County, approximately 5 miles south of the City of
Tracy, at the intersection of Interstate 580 and Corral Hollow Road (Figure 1). The
landfill covers approximately 58 acres, of which 43 acres was permitted disposal
area. The remaining area is comprised of access roads, storm water retention
ponds, setbacks for environmental monitoring, and firebreaks. Land within 1,000
feet of the facility is used for grazing and agriculture. The landfill was certified
closed in 1996 and is under postclosure maintenance. Postclosure maintenance
at the site includes:
Offsite Landfill Gas (LFG) migration monitoring. CHSL's offsite LFG migration
monitoring network includes seven soil gas monitoring wells. A LFG gas
system was installed in 2001 to control off-site migration and has been in
operation since then (Figure 1 and 2).
2. Groundwater monitoring. The landfill's groundwater monitoring network
consists of six monitoring wells. MW -4, SB -1, MW -5, and MW -8 monitor the
shallow aquifer while MW -6 and MW -7 monitor the deep aquifer (Figure 1).
3. Closure cover inspection and maintenance.
4. Site drainage inspection and maintenance.
5. Other upkeep of the landfill.
A Shell Oil pipeline runs along the northern property boundary of CHSL
(Figure 1 and 2). The pipe line is under the access road about five to eight feet
deep.
1.3 REASON FOR INSTALLING NEW LFG WELLS
The purpose of these wells is to increase LFG collection from refuse recently
discovered in the area. Detection of VOC compounds in MW -5 and MW -8, indicate
Work Plan — LFG Extraction Well Installation San Joaquin County
Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill Public Works Department
10-2-08 1 Solid Waste Division
