INFORMATION SHEET
WILLIAM LONG, SCOTT LONG, AND
LONG RANCH, INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
William and Scott Long (Discharger) have proposed expansion of a family owned business that
includes- hog ranching and processing (slaughterhouse) operations. The existing facility operates as
Long Ranch, Inc. at 5203 West Ripon Road, approximately 3 miles south of Manteca and 6 miles west
of Ripon in San Joaquin County. The facility occupies 14.4 acres and currently processes
approximately 200 swine weekly, which will increase to 800 swine per week, upon expansion. The
facility will consist of farrowing sheds, finishing barns, a manure storage area, holding pens two
slaughterhouses and a wastewater holding pond. Approximately 12 acres of the Discharger's property
and 68.5 acres of adjacent properties will be used as designated disposal areas (cropland).
Five types of wastes will be produced as part of the facility operations:
manure solids;
manured wastewater;
slaughterhouse wastewater;
whole blood; and
solid animal wastes.
Manure solids and manured wastewaters are produced primarily from the ranching operations.
Approximately 2100 gallons of manured wastewater are produced daily. Periodic flushings of the
sheds and barns remove the wastes to the holding pond where they are passed over a solids separator to
remove the solids from the manured wastewater. Accumulated manure is transferred to the manure
storage area, where it is subsequently hauled off site or, upon expansion, will be tilled into the cropland
soil prior to planting.
The slaughterhouse operations produce the other three types of wastes: rinsewaters, blood, and solid
animal wastes. Rinsewaters will be derived from animal, carcass, and kill-floor rinsings. These
rinsewaters will comprise the vast majority of the wastewater, estimated to be approximately 8000
gallons daily. Whole blood will be captured and stored in a tank for sale and will not be discharged to
the wastewater holding pond. Solid animal wastes consist of the discarded portions of the carcasses
(offal), fats, and greases. These solid wastes are produced during slaughterhouse operations and will
be segregated from the wastewaters using a screened grease trap. Offal, screenings, and other solids
will be will be collected for rendering and will not be discharged to the wastewater holding pond.
The on-site holding pond will be used to store the wastewaters prior to discharge to the designated
disposal areas. It is estimated that base of the existing pond has sealed over from settled and
compacted solids and that there is over 5 feet of separation between the base of the pond and shallow
groundwater. Alfalfa, silage corn, and oats are to be cropped in the designated disposal areas.
Baseline soil samples of the cropland were submitted.
Domestic waste will be discharged to a new septic tank and leachfield. Rainwater runoff from the
roofed facilities (pens, barns, sheds, manured storage area, and slaughterhouse) and from the paved
areas of the site will be captured and transferred to a Reclamation District 2075 drainage ditch.
