GROUND WATER INVESTIGATION WORK PLAN
BULK TERMINALS SITE, PORT OF STOCKTON, STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA
3.1.2.1 Boring and Sampling Locations
Twelve boring locations (C-1 through C-12; Figure 5) have been located to characterize the site
based on (1) presumed local shallow ground water gradient, and (2) historical and current bulk
commodity storage locations, as discussed below.
Bay Sulfur Storage Compound and Impoundment
Borings C-1 and C-2 are located downgradient with respect to the Bay Sulfur operations,
and boring C-12 is located adjacent to the presumed upgradient edge of Bay Sulfur
operations. Ground water samples collected from these borings and from MW-2 and MW-3
will characterize presumed downgradient extent of sulfates in ground water samples, and
provide data for the siting of presumed downgradient sentinel wells. Soil samples will be
collected from boring C-12 to characterize the vertical extent of sulfur in vadose zone.
Southeastern Petroleum Coke Stockpile Areas
Borings C-2, C-3, C-4 and C-5 are sited to characterize ground water presumed
downgradient from potential petroleum hydrocarbon, nickel and vanadium sources in the
southeastern petroleum coke stockpile areas (nickel and vanadium are byproducts of
petroleum coke manufacture), as well as to augment data from existing monitor well MW-4.
Soil samples will be collected from borings C-3 and C-4, adjacent to the stockpiles, to
characterize vadose zone soil. Borings C-3 and C-4 also provide soil and ground water
quality characterization in the vicinity of the conveyor system.
Northern (Dock 13) Stockpile Area
Borings C-7 and C-8 are sited to characterize ground water quality presumed downgradient
from the potential petroleum hydrocarbon, nickel and vanadium sources at the northern
coal and coke stockpile area, as well as providing presumed upgradient comparative data
for the existing monitor wells MW-1 through MW-4. Soil samples will be collected from
borings C-7 and C-8 adjacent to the stockpile, to characterize vadose zone soil. Boring C-8
also provides soil and ground water quality characterization in the vicinity of the conveyor
system.
H.J. Baker Sulfur Stockpile Area
Borings C-10 and C-11 are sited to characterize ground water quality presumed
downgradient from the H.J. Baker sulfur prill stockpile area, and are anticipated to indicate
whether or not impacts to shallow ground water have occurred.
Metropolitan Stevedore Copper Concentrate Transfer Area
Boring C-12 is located to characterize vadose zone soils in the historical copper concentrate
transfer area, as well as to assess impacts (if any) to ground water from transfer of copper
July 2005 Page 9 Environmental Risk Services Corp.
