11.4. Monitoring Well MW-4 (GPS N 37 56.808; W 121 19.919)
This monitoring well is located in the southeastern corner of Parcel III.
The condition of this monitoring well was initially unknown. There appeared to be
a steel "stovepipe" which has been partially crushed and bent. The casing
condition was unknown and it was unclear whether the bent stovepipe was
associated with the well casing or not. If the stovepipe was associated with the
well, it was unclear whether or not it had broken the well seal.
Monitoring Wells MW-1, MW-3 displayed varying degrees of surface
damage. Only Monitoring Well MW-2 appeared intact. Any potential damages to
MW- 4 was unknown and required verification upon identifying the actual well
cap. It is unclear when the wells were last cleaned and redeveloped. The
following summary table present the anticipated repairs needed to return the
wells to service based upon the surface observations.
Table 1- Summary Table of Initial* Well Conditions, April 9, 2003
Monitoring
Well Number
Surface
Condition
Well Casing
Condition
Well
Redevelopment
Replace
Surface
Access
Replacement
Well
MW-1 Poor. Needs
to be cleaned,
and new
casing cap.
Assumed OK.
Need surface
well access
box repair.
Yes, casing
appears clogged
to the surface;
casing needs to
be cleared,
Surface access
should be
repaired with
an above
ground access
to prevent
burial.
No provided
well can be
cleared and
repaired.
MW-2 Appears OK. Unknown
needs to be
opened and
checked.
Yes, well
assumed not
have been
sampled for
years.
Surface access
should be
cleared of
nearby surface
debris,
No, well
assumed to be
intact and
protected by
current well
box.
MW-3 Poor. Needs
to have surface
access
repaired.
Poor. Needs
casing cap and
protection such
as stovepipe,
Yes, well
assumed to not
have been
sampled for
years and is
open to surface.
Access in area
OK but needs
surface cap
and security.
No, but
assumes well
casing not
compromised ,
or broken
below surface.
MW-4 Unknown
requires
verification:
Outward
appearance of
a damaged of
stovepipe bent
and crimped at
surface.
Unknown
Needs to be
verified
Yes if well
salvageable,
assumed to
have not been
sampled in
years.
Unknown
requires
verification
Unknown
requires
verification
* Initial conditions were made by using visual observation of surface
4
