4.0 BASELINE INVESTIGATION RESULTS
Subsurface soils and groundwater in Parcel III were tested for heavy metals, pesticides, petroleum
hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, total sulphur, and sulfates.
Groundwater was also tested for sulfides.
4.1 SUBSURFACE SOIL INVESTIGATION
Subsurface soil in Parcel NI was investigated in five hand auger borings (B-3 through B-7), and
two borings drilled for monitoring well installations (MW-1 and MW-4) as illustrated in Figure 2. At
each of these locations, soil samples were collected from approximately 0.5 feet below the ground surface
(bgs), and when conditions allowed, from the capillary fringe.
Boring B-3 was located near the approximate center of the location of the former copper
concentrate stockpile. Soil samples were collected from depths of 0.5 and 13.5 feet below ground surface
(bgs) in this boring. Boring B-4 was located near the conveyor which extends to the dockside boom
tower, approximately 20 feet south of the bank of the channel. A single soil sample was collected from
0.5 feet bgs in this boring. Boring B-4 could not be advanced to the capillary fringe due to excessive
caving of thick fill materials. Boring B-5 was located near the drop off point of the conveyor which
adjoins the conveyor going to the dockside boom tower (Figure 2). A single soil sample was collected
at 0.5 feet bgs in this boring. Refusal was met in boring B-5 at a maximum depth of 3.0 feet bgs.
Boring B-6 was located near the west end of the drop off point of the conveyor which goes over the
tracks from the commodities stockpile area (Figure 2). Soil samples were collected from depths of 0.5
and 8.0 feet bgs in this boring. Boring B-7 was located directly under the drop off point of the short
conveyor on the south side of the tracks (Figure 2). Soil samples were collected from depths of 0.5 and
13.5 feet bgs in this boring. The samples were analyzed for:
CAM metals - STLC - EPA 6010;
Chlorinated Pesticides and PCBs - EPA 8080;
Organophosphate Pesticides - EPA 8140; and
Total Recoverable Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TRPH) - EPA 418.1.
Monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-4 are both located south of the tracks in Parcel III (Figure 2).
Soil samples were collected from depths of 0.5 and 10.0 feet bgs in both of the borings for these wells.
SAC28.013 December 20, 1991
8
DAN.I.FS MOOIZE
