Box 5252
Pleasanton, CA 94566
MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION, KERLINGER AGGREGATE PLANT, RMC LONESTAR
(CASE NO. 3123)
We have received the Monitoring Well installation report for the Kerlinger Plant
in Tracy, California, and have the following comments:
1 . The purpose of the "spacer" or seal above the sand pack is two fold.
First, it prevents the cement grout from infiltrating the sand pack. The
seal must have sufficient integrity so as to not be displaced by the grout.
The seal must also have low permeability. In the case of cracking of the
cement grout, the seal must stop the infiltration of water from above.
Therefore, we suggest that the spacer above the sand pack be constructed
as a bentonite seal with a minimum two foot thickness. The use of silica
flour or fine sand is not suggested because of its permeability.
2. For well sampling, purging should continue until the parameters of electric
conductivity (EC) , pH, and temperature stabilize, or until at least three
well volumes of water are removed. If the well is slow to recover, your
method is sufficient.
3. The regional ground water gradient in the area of the Kerlinger Plant is
generally towards the southwest. It is also possible that Corral Hollow
Creek is affecting the gradient in the immediate area of the unit.
Therefore, we suggest that the proposed locations, of the monitoring wells
be shifted slightly to account for this. Enclosed is a copy of your map
with our suggested locations.
The monitoring well installation and sampling plan is approved, contingent on
the above comments being included. Please inform me of when the monitoring wells
are to be installed, as I may wish to observe.
If you have any questions, please call me at (916) 361-5737.
-,J-E"P REY K.
