1 Hunter Container Corporation
35275 Hivy. 33, Vernalis, California April 23, 1996
Phase r-Site Characterization (WastelBurn Pit) Page: 4
during this study and located, as they are shown on Figure 2, to target these
areas of contaminatioin previously identified in ERM's study. A 2.5 foot b.g.l.
soil sample was not taken where ERM conducted the S-6 sample. This is
primarily because this area will be included in a seperate, and already
scheduled, phase of work and reported seperately.
rConfirmation of ERM's samples S-3, 7, 9 and I I could not be accomplished by
hand augering because at approximately one (1) to one half ('/z) foot b.g.l.,
asphalt pavement was encountered. After an extended period of field time, the
augering tool finally penetrated the asphalt pavement layer and in turn
encountered another asphalt layer approximately 1-2 inches below the prior one.
Sampling in this area was terminated. This boundary/barrier is by no means a
aquifuge, but will act as an aquiclude for vertical contaminant
mobility/migration of soluble contaminants. Furthermore, ERM's samples
taken in this area tested very low to minimal levels of Lead (Table 3). No
detections of any other analytes, except for 35 mg/kg Lead and 310 dug/kg
Toluene in sample "S-7" were noted.
4.0 C011clrrsions
;.'
4.1 Waste/Burn Pit
Relatively high contamination levels of Lead were identified in the spoils pile from the
waste/bum pit. The spoils pile, approximately 29.86 tons, was transported off-site on March
18, 1996, to Chemical Waste Management, Inc., an approved Class I hazardous waste facility,
located on 3 525 1 Old Skyline Road, in Kettleman City, California. Rich Hamilton Trucking, a
DOT certified hazardous waste trucking company, transported all soil of the subject site
property under manifest documents 95903732 and 95903732, as referenced in Appendix C.
4.2 Surrounding Area
All surface samples taken at 2.5 feet b.g.l. showed no evidence of contamination
except for the presence of Motor Oil detected in RB-1, 2 & 3, and RB-5. It is shown,
by the work accomplished in this report, that the previous surface sampling event by
ERM, Inc., in April of 1995, indicated that levels of contamination were significantly
elevated. Although, below surface grade contaminants were, representatively, shown
to be non detectable, except for very low concentrations of Motor Oil. The detections
of Motor Oil are residual, less than 100 rng/kg (Maximum Contaminant Level "MCL"
< 100 mg/kg), and thus, posses minimal, if no, risk for the environmental conditions
at this site.
3
