R5-2005-0827
I reviewed the Ozone Injection — Bench Scale and Injection Pilot Study-Addendum/Monitoring Well
Installation— Work Plan (Workplan Addendum) submitted electronically in an email on
3 July 2006 on your behalf by Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE). The Workplan Addendum
was submitted in response to my 1 June 2006 letter Workplan comments (Letter). The Workplan
Addendum provides the detailed rationale (including aquifer zones and volume of groundwater
pollution to be treated, soil types, calculated radius of sparge well influence) for the 17 ozone injection
well design for the proposed ozone pilot study (OPS). The three target depths are 65 feet, 100 feet,
and 150 feet below ground surface. Final approval of the OPS Workplan and Workplan Addendum is
contingent upon favorable results from the Bench Scale Test (BST) previously approved conditionally
in the Letter. The Workplan Addendum also included detailed drawings of the pilot study ozone piping
runs, a geologic cross-section of the zones to be treated showing the proposed wells, and photographs
of the ozone sparging tips. The Workplan Addendum proposes a 6-month pilot study, with a report,
tentatively due in the Spring of 2007, which evaluates ozone injection as a possible final remediation of
petroleum hydrocarbons from the UST release.
The Workplan Addendum adequately addresses my comments in the Letter. In a phone conversation
with AGE on 6 July 2006, 1 was informed that the BST will be scheduled for early August 2006, due to
their lab moving to a new location. Please provide the Geochemical Evaluation Report of the BST by
30 September 2006, with revised schedules for A) the 6-month Pilot Study Evaluation Report, to be
followed by B) the Feasibility Study and a Final Remediation Action Plan (previously requested by
15 December 2006 in my Letter).
If you have any questions`, please contact me at (916) 464-4615 or jbarton@waterboards.ca.gov.
James L.L.
