25 July 2003
AGE -NC Project No. 03-1063
Page 4of5
3.2. SOIL EXCAVATION
Impacted soil in the area of boring P-6, adjacent to a former hydraulic lift, will be excavated. Based
upon laboratory results of soil samples collected during a previous subsurface investigation,
approximately 100 tons of impacted soil will be removed from the former lift area. Soil will be
excavated to a depth of approximately 12 to 15 feet below surface grade (bsg).
During excavation activities, excavated soil will be screened for volatile organic compounds using
an organic vapor monitor (OVM). Excavated soil that appears visibly stained or has a petroleum
hydrocarbon odor will be considered impacted.
3.3. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Approximately 5 soil samples will be collected from the excavation will be submitted for laboratory
analysis. Following State of California Regional Water Quality Board, Tri -Regional Board
recommendations, soil samples will be collected from the base and each side wall of the "new"
excavation at a minimum interval of every 20 linear feet. Soil samples will be collected from the
base of the excavation at a minimum of one sample for every 400 square feet of excavation area.
Field procedures for collection of soil samples are presented in Section 4.2.
Selected soil samples will be analyzed by a State of California Department of Health Services
(DHS) -certified laboratory for the following constituents:
• TPH and hydraulic fluid by EPA Method 8015 Modified/5030; and
• BTEX by EPA Method 8020.
Laboratory reports for soil analyses, testing methods, laboratory quality assurance/quality control
(QA/QC) reports, and sample chain of custody documentation will be presented in a report with
findings and recommendations.
3.4. REPORT PREPARATION
Upon completion of field work and receipt of final laboratory analysis, a report will be prepared
presenting the findings of the soil removal activities. The report will include a description of the
work performed and the results of the sampling and analysis. Conclusions and applicable
recommendations will be included in the report. The report will be reviewed and signed by a
California Registered Geologist.
