Project Background Information
Active Soil Gas Survey
UPRR Site, Stockton, California
Objective:
The objective of this active soil gas survey is to obtain data for evaluation of the risk for
exposure of current and future occupants of the site to potential chemicals of concern
(PCOCs) in soil. The PCOCs identified during a recently completed passive soil gas
survey included, but may not be limited to, the following:
Petroleum hydrocarbons; and
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including volatile polynuclear aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Site Location:
The site, Area 24, is located to the south of West Weber Avenue, between Lincoln and
Van Buren Streets (Figure 1 — attached). In the southeast corner of Area 24 is a building
that was a former warehouse, converted to the Stockton Children's Museum several years
ago. To the immediate south of this building is a children's playground. To the
immediate east and north is grass covered landscaping. Also to the north is asphalt
covered parking with a grass strip between the parking and Weber Avenue. To the west
of the building is a former railroad bed and native soil covered ground.
Technical Requirements:
A total of approximately 20 soil gas samples will be collected in the vicinity of the
building located on Area 24. One sample will be collected from each of twelve locations.
Four additional locations will be converted to permanent soil gas sampling locations,
with each location having two probes, one at 5 feet and the second at 10 feet below
ground surface (bgs). The permanent probes will be used to provide data for time-series
trend analysis. The specific sample locations will be finalized and utility location
coordination provided by client prior to field mobilization.
Work included is as follows:
Collection of soil gas samples at a depth of 5 feet bgs at 12 locations;
Collection of soil gas samples at depths of 5 and 10 feet bgs at the four permanent
locations;
Analysis of soil gas samples in accordance with DTSC guidelines for the
appropriate analytical methods to quantify site PCOCs as referenced above; and
Data reporting.
Work to be performed by a drilling contractor is as follows:
Advance boreholes and install sampling tubes/probes in conjunction with mobile
laboratory;
Backfilling of probe holes with a bentonite mixture;
Coring through concrete and asphalt (if required); and
Surface completion of the 4 permanent soil gas locations.
ActiveSoilGas_ProjectBI_Area24UPRR
