File Report
April 7, 1998
locations during the owner's investigation into the vapor recovery system problem, RCP
determined that it should quickly identify any problems associated with the referenced
localized surface spill.
On March 13, 1998, Amherst's geologist collected two shallow soil samples from the
area identified by the SJCEHD as the entry point of the surface spill (lowest point where
the reported hydraulic pumping occurred). A small portion of the concrete apron in this
settled area was lifted out by hand and an undisturbed sample collected at the concrete
soil interface. The geologist then hand excavated down to a depth of 1.5 feet below the
concrete soil interface where a second undisturbed sample was collected
(see Figure 2). Given the closed status of the facility, these samples were collected to
determine a "worst case scenario" of the impact due to the diesel spill identified in
September 1997. The following procedures were used and maintained in the collection
of these two samples.
Undisturbed Soil Sample Collection
The undisturbed soil samples were collected per California Code of Regulations, Title
23, Section 2654, Subsection C.
A hand-driven sampler coupled with a stainless steel sleeve was used to collect
undisturbed soil samples. Once the desired depth for sampling was reached, a hand
sampler was driven to the desired depth, the sleeve removed from the sampler, the ends
sealed with Teflon followed by airtight plastic caps, and placed in an ice-chilled cooler for
preservation. Strict chain-of-custody forms were maintained to document the sample
collection and transportation to the laboratory for analysis.
Analytical Laboratory Analysis
These two samples were submitted to Sequoia Analytical (a California State Certified
Laboratory) for chemical analysis for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel by modified
EPA method 8015 and for Gasoline, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene by
4
RCP0407
