Connell Motor Lift Truck (CMLT)
In November 1998, a Phase 1 investigation for a potential property transfer identified areas of potential
concern at CMLT. The areas of potential concern included: 1) the waste oil AGTs located outside of the
building, 2) oil stains on the concrete slab near the ACT, and 3) two surface depressions (suspected dry
wells) in soil adjacent to the building. In February 1999, a Phase 2 investigation utilizing cone
penetrometer testing (CPT) advanced borings P1 through P18, and a July 1999 Preliminary Site
Investigation advanced CPTs P20 through P29 and boring M1. The investigations identified high levels
of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) identified as Stoddard solvent (Stoddard), in soil and
groundwater. Stoddard was historically used for cleaning vehicle parts. Methanol, benzene,
ethylbenzene, toluene, xylenes, tetrachloroethene (PCE), and 1, 2-dichloroethene (1, 2-DCE) were also
detected in soil. Due to the presence of solvents found at this Site, Central Valley Regional Water
Quality Control Board (Regional Board) staff opened a Site Cleanup case on 19 May 2000.
