APPENDIX D <br />Excavating & Trenching <br />2.1.4 Protection from Loose Rock or Soil <br />Adequate protection shall be provided to protect employees from loose rock or soil that could pose <br />a hazard to personnel in the excavation. All temporary spoil piles shall be kept at least 2 feet away <br />from the edge of the excavation. Spoil piles should be placed to channel rainwater or other run-off <br />water away from the excavation. <br />2.1.5 Hazardous Atmospheres <br />All excavations deeper than 4 feet deep and which have the potential to have a hazardous <br />atmosphere or oxygen deficient atmospheres (Less than 19.5% oxygen) must be tested to ensure <br />safe working conditions, prior to entry. Air monitoring shall be conducted in accordance with <br />Section 4.0 of the HASP. <br />2.1.6 Protective Systems <br />Each employee in an excavation shall be protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system <br />except when excavations are made entirely in stable rock or the excavation is less than 5 feet in <br />depth and examination by the Competent Person provides no indication of a potential cave-in. <br />Protective systems consist of sloping or benching, use of trench boxes or other shielding <br />mechanisms, or the use of a shoring system in accordance with the regulations.
