Appendix A: Standard Operating Guideline -
Typical Hydraulic Push/Drive Sampling Procedures
Al Introduction
This guideline describes the equipment and procedures typically used by Kennedy/Jenks
Consultants personnel for collecting soil and reconnaissance groundwater samples with a hydraulic
push/drive system.
A.2 Equipment
Portable, hydraulic push/drive sampling system
4-foot long or 5-foot long (depending on drive rod length), 1.75-inch O.D. acetate or butyrate
liners (or other appropriate size for the push/drive rods) and liner sealing materials (Teflon
sheets, plastic end caps, Ziploc plastic bags)
Type II Portland cement
Equipment cleaning materials
Steam cleaner
Generator
Stiff-bristle brushes
Buckets
High-purity phosphate-free liquid soap
Distilled or Deionized water
Rinsate collection system
Personal protective equipment
Appropriate groundwater sample containers
Chain-of-custody forms
Insulated sample storage container and ice or ice substitute
A.3 Typical Procedures
Applicable drilling permits will be obtained prior to mobilization.
Sample locations will be cleared for underground utilities.
All re-usable downhole equipment will be cleaned prior to use at each location.
Soil borings will be advanced using a portable, hydraulic push/drive sampling system that drives
steel sampling rods into the ground to collect continuous soil cores.
An acetate liner is fitted inside of the lead steel rod, which has an open bottom. Soil is driven
into the acetate liner as the steel rods are advanced. In the dual-tube system, upon advancing
the steel rods the length of one rod (5-feet), the acetate liner is retrieved while the steel rods
remain in the borehole, providing a continuous casing. After retrieving the filled acetate liner, a
new liner is then lowered back into steel rods and the rods will be driven another 5 feet. This
process will be repeated until the desired depth is reached.
Additional Soil and Groundwater Sample Work Plan, Page 1
BNSF Mormon Yard, Stockton, California
Mybnsf2\bnsfwp\wp1201811899020 00_r ormon_yardworkplan_dlappasoghydrpushrive acpt chng_wp.eloc
