3
Figure 2. Three soil samples were collected from below the former 26,000-gallon diesel
tank, two soil samples were collected from below the former 10,000-gallon wastewater tank,
and two soil samples were collected from below the former 2,000-gallon gasoline tank. A
soil sample was also collected from below the remote fill line for the former 26,000-gallon
diesel tank.
The upper two to three feet of soil was scraped away at the selected sample locations prior to
collecting the sample. Samples from beneath the former tanks were removed from the
excavation by backhoe. Care was taken to select the most intact portions of soil in the
backhoe bucket which had not contacted the sides of the bucket. Clean brass tubes were then
driven into the soil in the backhoe bucket Composite samples of the stockpiled soil removed
from above and adjacent to the former underground storage tanks were also collected.
Sampling tools were decontaminated prior to each use by scrubbing in a tri sodium phosphate
(TSP) solution followed by rinsing with deionized water. Soil samples were logged on a
chain of custody form, placed in ice chests and hand delivered to Canonie Environmental
Laboratory in Stockton for chemical analysis.

4. Soil samples from beneath the former 26,000-gallon diesel tank, associated stockpile and
remote fill line were analyzed for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons by EPA Method
8015 and BTEX by EPA Method 8020. Soil samples from beneath the former 10,000-gallon
wastewater tank and associated stockpile were analyzed for total extractable petroleum
hydrocarbons by EPA Method 8015 and BTEX by EPA Method 8020, chlorinated
hydrocarbons by EPA Method 8010, PCBs by EPA Method 8080, and the metals cadmium,
chromium, lead and zinc. Soil samples from beneath the former 2,000-gallon gasoline tank
and associated stockpile were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline by EPA
Method 8015 and B l'EX by EPA Method 8020, tetraethyl lead, and ethylene dibromide by
EPA Method 504.
4.0 ANALYTICAL RESULTS

1. Results of laboratory analyses are shown in Table 1, and copies of the laboratory reports are
included in Appendix D. The soil samples from beneath the former 26,000-gallon diesel tank
(ST-2A, B, C) were reported to contain total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons ranging
from 3,900 to 5,100 mg/kg and xylenes ranging from 0.016 to 0.072 mg/kg.
