Michael Kith [EH]
From: Greg Stahl <gstahl@groundzeroanalysis.com >
Sent: Friday, January 26, 2018 10:23 AM
To: Michael Kith [EH]
Subject: FW:
Attachments: MW2jpg; MW2x.jpg; 0S1jpg
Re-sending this email with photo file sizes shrunk.
From: Greg Stahl
Sent: Friday, January 19, 2018 3:21 PM
To: 'Michael Kith [EH]'
Cc: Andrew Dorn
Subject: WELL DESTRUCTION AT 1680 DURHAM FERRY RD., TRACY, PERMITS WP0037620/SR00781134
Hello Michael:
We are finally almost done at the site. The only wells that remain to be destroyed are MW-2, MW-2X and OS-1. These
are the wells in conflict with fiber optic lines. We met with Level 3/Century Link Communications locator yesterday to
re-mark the lines and we learned a bit about what's down there. There are six (6) fiber optic lines in the trench and only
one of those lines has tracer wire for the locator to home in on. The lines are buried at an estimated depth of about 7
feet according to his instrument. However that is not exact and the as-built drawings do not specify the depth of burial.
The attached photos shown the wells and the fiber optic line locations:
Photo 123214 shows MW-2. Zoom in and you will see that the well is only 5" from the marked lines and well
within the 2-foot legal tolerance zone.
Photo 123259 shows MW-2X located 1-foot, 8-inches from the marking and within the 2-foot tolerance zone.
Photo 123420 shows OS-1 located 4'4" from the marking and outside the tolerance zone.
We propose to pressure-grout MW-2 and MW-2X since to drill them out we would legally need to expose the fiber optic
lines with hand tools. At an estimated depth of 7 feet not only would shoring be required but the exercise would be
time-consuming, expensive and disruptive to the Durham Ferry roadway.
Although well OS-1 is outside the tolerance zone we do recommend pressure grouting instead of over-drilling. This well
is constructed with '/2-inch diameter stainless steel casing. The small diameter precludes the use of a pilot rod on the
drill string to keep the boring centered. Past experience shows that there is a high likelihood that the augers will wander
off track since the grout is harder than the surrounding soil. We wouldn't want the augers to deflect toward the fiber
optic lines.
Please take these observation into consideration and let us know.
Thanks,
Greg Stahl
Ground Zero Analysis
(209) 522-4119
From: Andrew Dorn
Sent: Friday, January 26, 2018 10:17 AM
1
