(102F). Observe the victim and obtain medical help. Do not give the victim
tea, coffee, or alcoholic beverages.
Control (General): In hot conditions (generally >70°F), more frequent rest
and fluid -intake is required. Wear a hat, use sun block lotion, provide shade,
when possible, and institute a work/rest program.
4. 6.2 Fires and Explosions
Hazard: A spark generated by static electricity or other ignition source can
have sufficient energy to ignite flammable or explosive gases, vapors, or
dusts. Static electricity can be generated by the contact and separation of
dissimilar material and can occur between two charged bodies even if there is
no good electrical conductive path between them. The obvious hazards of
fires and explosions are contact and/or inhalation burns. Depending on their
severity, either can result in death.
Control/Prevention: The two primary methods of preventing thermal injury
from fire or explosions are to prevent their occurrence or, if they should
happen, to be at a safe distance away. Use equipment that will detect an
explosive or flammable atmosphere (e.g., explosimeter) and equipment that
will not ignite flammable gases or vapors (e.g., intrinsically safe instruments,
non -sparking brass, bronze, or aluminum tools).
In areas where flammable liquids are stored, handled, used, dispensed, or
transferred, smoking and the carrying of lighters, matches, and other spark -
producing clothing (e.g., polyester) and devices shall be prohibited.
Static electricity can be prevented from causing a spark during flammable
liquid transfer by bonding and grounding. Bonding is the linking of two
containers by an electrical connection. Grounding eliminates a difference in
electrical potential between a container and the earth. For bonding and
grounding to be effective, both containers must be metal and at least one
container must be grounded. It is important that clamps or clips make a good
metalAo-metal contact and are not blocked by a non-conductive material such
as paint.
4.7 CHEMICAL HAZARDS
The following hazards were assessed for the potential to exist or develop
during the performance of the project activities:
Types)/Source:
• Combust./flam./explos.
