INFORNATION SHEET
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
NORTH COUNTY SANITARY LANDFILL
CLASS III LANDFILL
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
The North County Sanitary Landfill is a new Class III landfill owned and
operated by San Joaquin County. The landfill is intended to be a
replacement for the Harney Lane Landfill , which will be closing. The
North County Landfill will consist of eleven modules, constructed as
needed, covering 212 of the 320 acre facility. Modules I and 2 will be
constructed first, and will be the initial landfilling area.
Clay liners and leachate collection and removal systems (LCRS) will be
constructed in each of the modules. This will mitigate the possible
migration of leachate to ground water. The possibility of increased
sedimentation of South Paddy Creek will be mitigated by the construction
of wide, shallow perimeter ditches in which vegetation will be
encouraged. The ditches will reroute South Paddy Creek around the
landfilling area.
A public drop-off and recycling center will be operated on-site. No
public vehicles will be allowed to discharge at the active face.
Instead, they will unload at the public drop-off point so that the load
can be checked for hazardous wastes. The loads will also be checked for
any recyclable wastes at that time.
JKT
