Mr. Tom Horton Afth, Id1h. Project 939-02.22
January 25, 1990
Page 6
Typical Recycling Activities at Landfills
Organized recycling activities occur at most existing landfills. These activities
range from salvaging at the landfill face to mechanized materials sorting and
recovery. The following numbered sections describe many of the current
materials recovery processes.
1. Sorting at the Landfill Face
Sorting at the landfill face is typically focused on the larger, more
valuable materials. Commonly salvaged materials include:
• Ferrous metals
• Aluminum
• Wood
• Corrugated cardboard
2.. Sorting on a Slab
To improve recovery effectiveness, concentrated commercial loads
and public loads are tipped onto a concrete slab. The refuse is
then spread in a thin layer over the slab, making the recyclable
materials easier to identify and manually recover.
3. Conveyor Picking
Spreading and sorting recyclable materials on a slab is sometimes
enhanced by including a portable conveyor/sorting station. The
larger materials are removed while the refuse is on the slab; the
material is then dumped into a hopper, which feeds the conveyer
belt. Workers are stationed along the belt to pick out the following
select materials:
• Glass
• Cans (aluminum and ferrous)
• Wood
• Newspaper
• Corrugated
• Plastic
