The three deep borings will be drilled to the water table, estimated to
be at a depth of 115 to 140 feet below ground surface, and will be
advanced 15 to 20 feet into the water-bearing zone. The deep borings
will then be converted - to monitoring wells by the installation of
4-1/2 inch PVC casing. The casing will be slotted and will be blank
from there to the ground surface. Packer tests will be conducted in
these borings to determine in-situ permeability of the water-bearing
zone. In-situ permeability tests will be conducted in two shallow
borings (permeameters) to determine the permeability of the unsaturated
zone lying immediately below the proposed landfill site.
Borings will be advanced into soil and bedrock by air rotary drilling
equipment to retrieve representative samples of soil and rock underlying
the site and to detect ground water. Spot core samples will be col-
lected of representative rock types in the unsaturated zone, and once
ground water is detected in the deep borings, a continuous core sample
will be collected for 20 feet into the water-bearing zone. If flowing
sands or conditions of lost air circulation are encountered, we may have
to convert to mud rotary drilling to complete the borings. Unforeseen
drilling problems related to subsurface conditions may require abandon-
ment of a particular boring and the need to drill a new boring.
TASK 5 - Soil and Water Sampling and Laboratory Testing
Up to six selected near surface soil samples obtained from exploratory
borings will be tested in the laboratory to determine their engineering
properties and suitability for use in landfill construction.
Water samples will be collected from the monitoring wells to provide
background data and will be analyzed for the following parameters:
PRA 8610-22D II-5
E(T1C0(1 Associates_j
