GSI Job No.: 14 G S 1T
Issued: 15 November 2017
ENVIRONMENTAL
5.3 Soil Sample Collection Procedures
Soil borings will be advanced using direct-push drilling techniques with dual-cased drilling rods to
collect soil samples for VOC analysis and lithologic description, maintain a cased boring between
sample retrieval runs to minimize the potential for cross-contamination between sample intervals,
and to facilitate the installation of temporary soil gas probes.
Soil sampling collection procedures are further described in the following subsections.
5.3.1 Soil Sample Collection
Recovered soil will be screened for the presence of VOCs using a photoionization detector (PID)
as recovered soil is removed from the drive samplers and initially observed, and also in head
space samples from intermittent depths. Soil samples will be collected from select depths using
US EPA Method 5035 field methods for the preservation of VOCs. GSI will collect soil samples
from each boring based on lithology and results of PID screening. Preliminary target intervals for
soil sampling are from depths of 2 to 2.5 feet bgs, 4.5 to 5 feet bgs, 9.5 to 10 feet bgs, and 14.5
to 15 feet bgs.
GSI will describe soil boring lithology in accordance with ASTM Method D2488 visual-manual
methods/the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Observations will be recorded on boring
log sheets, along with soil sample collection intervals and results of soil core screening using a
PID.
5.3.2 Sampling Packaging, Shipment, and Chain-of-Custody
Each soil sample will be identified with a sample-specific identification code linking the sample to
descriptive information recorded in field documents (including boring identification and sample
depth). A separate label will be affixed to each sample container with a self-adhesive backing
and a record of samples submitted to the laboratory will be entered onto a chain of custody form.
The samples will be placed in an ice-filled chest and transported to the analytical laboratory under
chain-of-custody procedures.
5.3.3 Equipment Decontamination
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, re-usable sampling equipment will be
decontaminated using laboratory-grade detergent and potable water, and rinsed twice with
potable water, or by using a high pressure steam cleaner.
5.3.4 Equipment Calibration and Maintenance
The PID used during the investigation will be maintained and calibrated according to manufacturer
specifications. GSI will calibrate the PID once a day, at a minimum, before starting work activities.
5.4 Soil Sample Analysis
Select soil samples will be analyzed for VOCs by US EPA Method 8260B by a California
Department of Public Health Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP) certified
laboratory.
5.5 Soil Gas Sampling and Analysis
The soil gas investigation will be conducted in general accordance with the July 2015 California
Environmental Protection Agency's Advisory — Active Soil Gas Investigations (Advisory).
Site Investigation Work Plan
Park Woods Cleaners
