Utility Locating
Prior to drilling, general arrangement plans are consulted, and boring locations are marked with
white paint or other discernible marking and cleared for underground utilities through USA. In
addition, a private utility locator is contracted to evaluate whether the proposed boring
locations are clear of potential subsurface utilities.
Hand Auger Soil Boring Advancement and Sampling
Hand Auger Borehole Advancement and Soil Sampling
Hand auger drilling is accomplished by manually advancing a stainless steel cutter head
(typically three or four inches in diameter) into underlying soils. The soil cuttings are stored in the
cutter head while advancing the cutter head. Once the cutter head is full, the auger is
retracted and the soil cuttings discharged to a drum. The hand auger assembly consists of five-
foot rod extensions that may be connected to achieve the desired sample depth.
Prior to drilling or sampling, and prior to reaching the saturated zone, the cutter head and
sampling equipment are cleaned to avoid cross contamination. Equipment decontamination
procedures are outlined under Equipment Decontamination, below.
Soil cuttings are used for soil classification and field evaluation of headspace volatile organic
vapors, where applicable, using a photo ionization or flame ionization detector calibrated to a
calibration gas (typically isobutylene or hexane). VOC vapor concentrations are recorded on
the boring logs.
Once the desired sampling depth is achieved by the hand auger, undisturbed samples are
collected by driving a clean sampler lined with a brass or stainless steel liner into the underlying
undisturbed soils. Alternatively, an AMS hand auger core sampler specifically designed to
collect relatively undisturbed soil samples by inserting a clean stainless steel or brass soil sample
sleeve in the bucket of the auger may be used. Cuttings are not used for soil sample collection.
The sample is carefully packaged for chemical analysis by capping each end of the sample
with a Teflon sheet followed by a tight-fitting plastic cap, and sealing the cap with non-VOC,
self-adhering silicon tape.
A label is affixed to the sample indicating the sample identification number, borehole number,
sampling depth, sample collection date and time, the sampler's name, and job number. The
sample is then annotated on a chain-of-custody form and placed in an ice-filled cooler for
transport to the laboratory.
Direct Push (GEOPROBEM Borehole Advancement and Soil Sampling
Pre-cleaned push rods are advanced using a hydraulic push type rig for the purpose of
collecting samples and evaluating subsurface conditions. Larger diameter push rod(s) (typically
4-inche outer diameter) are advanced to the desired depth to seal the upper water-bearing
zone. Outer rods are not extended into the saturated zone before collection of groundwater
Stantec
