Placental Waste: <br />Placentas shall be handled and disposed of as "pathologic waste" in accordance with California Health & <br />Safety Code Section 118275(f) and 118215 (a), unless as described herein. Because placentas are filled with <br />liquid blood, they are classified as biohazardous waste. <br />Unfixed (without formalin preservative added; fresh) placentas are considered biohazardous waste. Unfixed <br />placentas from Obstetrics are stored in the Pathology refrigerator for up to ninety-six (96) hours and then are <br />handled as pathology waste per #3 above. <br />Fixed (with formalin preservative) placentas with residual formalin preservative will be handled as <br />pathology waste per #3 above. <br />6. Pharmaceutical Waste: <br />All pharmaceutical waste will be separated from other medical waste and hazardous wastes deposited in a <br />specially marked, blue collection container labeled with the words "Incineration Only." Pharmaceutical <br />waste containers shall be considered "full" when they reach 2/3 capacity or the manufacturer's full <br />line. When the container is full, without compacting, the lid is to be capped or otherwise secured to <br />prevent loss of contents prior to disposal. Pharmaceutical waste containers are serviced at their installed <br />locations by either Stericycle or EVS personnel. The waste containers will be stored and transported <br />to the Biohazardous 'Waste Storage Area located near the shipping / receiving area or the Central <br />Hazardous Waste Storage Room located near the hospital morgue. These storage areas will be locked <br />at all times. Access will be limited to Environmental Services, Plant Operations & Maintenance <br />Department, or other authorized personnel. These containers are picked up by Stericycle medical waste <br />hauler for transport to an approved incineration facility on a scheduled basis. <br />B. Medical Waste Storage Methods: <br />Worksite accumulation areas near waste generation sites (patient rooms, surgical suites, <br />procedure/treatment/examination rooms) include soiled utility rooms. <br />All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area until treated by <br />Environmental Services personmel. All biohazardous waste shall be stored, handled, or transported in <br />containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers, and are kept clean and in good repair. This area <br />shall be marked with warning signs saying in English: <br />°CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA - UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS DEEP OUT" <br />and in Spanish: <br />"CUIDADO - ZONE RESIDUOUS-BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS - PROHIBIDA LA ENTRADA A <br />PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS" <br />Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a temperature above <br />32 degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any waste has been placed in the bag or container for <br />storage purposes. <br />All reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and storage of medical waste <br />shall be washed and decontaminated every time they are emptied, unless the container surfaces have been <br />completely protected from contamination by disposable liners or bags; containers shall be washed and <br />decontaminated when they are visibly soiled. <br />Surfaces are washed and decontaminated with a germicidal (tuberculocidal) detergent solution; the solution <br />should be allowed contact with the surface for a minimum of 10 minutes. <br />C.
