Transport of Medical Waste Under the "T ited Quantity Hauling Exemption" Page 3 of 4 <br />Ir <br />1. The waste is composed of waste which is generated or produced as a result <br />of any of the following actions: <br />a. Diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals. <br />b. Research pertaining to the activities specified in subparagraph (A). <br />c. The production or testing of biologicals. <br />d. The accumulation of properly contained home -generated sharps waste <br />that is brought by a patient, a member of the patient's family, or by a <br />person authorized by the enforcement agency, to a point of consolidation <br />approved by the enforcement agency pursuant to Section 117904 or <br />authorized pursuant to Section 118147. <br />e. Removal of a regulated waste, as defined in Section 5193 of Title 8 of <br />the California Code of Regulations, from a trauma scene by a trauma <br />scene waste management practitioner. <br />2. The waste is either of the following: <br />a. Biohazardous waste. <br />b. Sharps waste. <br />Text: <br />The LQHE is a permit renewedannually requiring completion of an application and a fee <br />payment. <br />The staff trained and authorized to perform this task are typically from Home <br />Health Care or other hospital staff assisting in health fairs. <br />Procedure: <br />0 The hauler is to complete a portion of the medical waste tracking document as indicated. <br />2. The hauler is to package and transport medical waste as follows: <br />a. Transport less than 20 pounds (<20 lb.) of medical waste at one time. <br />b. Sharps are to be disposed of and transported in an approved sharps container that is <br />labeled with the biohazard symbol, closable, leak -proof, and puncture -resistant. <br />c. Other medical waste is to be disposed of and transported in red plastic bags (double - <br />bagged) that are labeled with the biohazard symbol. <br />d. Transport using the trunk of an automobile or the covered bed of a truck. <br />3. Transport waste from off-site location to the hospital's Environmental Services (EVS) <br />Department. <br />4. Transfer the medical waste and the tracking document to the EVS representative. <br />5. The receiver is to complete the medical waste tracking document. If the hauler does not <br />possess a tracking document on arrival, one must be completed prior to hauler's departure. <br />6. The EVS representative forwards the completed tracking document to the EVS <br />Director.
