Plan - Medical Waste Manage nt Program Page 7 of 10
9P 0
signs saying in English:
"CAUTION-BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA - UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS
KEEP OUT"
and in Spanish:
"CUIDADO - ZONE RESIDUOUS-BIOLOGICOS PELIGROSOS - PROHIBIDA LA
ENTRADA A PERSONAS NO AUTORIZADAS"
Biohazard bags and filled sharps containers shall not be stored for more than 7 days at a
temperature above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This 7 day period begins when any waste
has been placed in the bag or container for storage purposes.
All reusable rigid containers that are used for accumulation, transportation and storage of
medical waste shall be washed and decontaminated every time they are emptied, unless
the container surfaces have been completely protected from contamination by disposable
liners or bags; containers shall be washed and decontaminated when they are visibly
soiled.
Surfaces are washed and decontaminated with a germicidal (tuberculocidal) detergent
solution; the solution should be allowed contact with the surface for a minimum of 10
minutes.
C. Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal Method:
Dameron Hospital treats medical waste on-site using steam sterilization via a Sani-Pak
unit. All solid waste is removed by a municipal waste hauler.
All chemotherapeutic, pharmaceutical wastes and pathologic waste will be picked up at
least weekly by Stericycle medical waste hauler and transported to the off-site treatment
facility identified below. Records of medical waste transported to Stericycle will be kept
by the Facility Hazardous Chemical Coordinator and retained for a minimum of three
years.
D. Emergency Action Plan:
While it is highly unlikely that the company would experience a shutdown of operations,
contingencies include use of an alternate hauler or retention of the medical waste for not
more than 7 days from the point of generation above 0 degrees Centigrade (32 degrees
Fahrenheit). Another contingency for less well-defined emergency situations would be to
contact the Environmental Health Division -Medical Waste Management Program of San
Joaquin County for recommendations
Spills are cleaned up by removing gross contamination and then disinfecting the area
utilizing a germicidal (tuberculocidal) detergent solution with a contact time of ten (10)
minutes.
E. Waste Hauler: Stericycle Incorporated
http://dhalts0l /policylpolicy.nsF2b0l45f9f8l 80bc287257276006425641bbd8 f2e555d6304... 4/14/2011
