Nbv. 7. 201 V1 0: 47ARanagergWProgram No. 3596PagP. 5-f8
ISOLATION WASTE - Waste contaminated with excretion, exudate, or secretions from humans who
are isolated due to highly communicable diseases.
CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC WASTE - Trace amounts of chemotherapeutic waste.
PATHOLOGY WASTE - Recognizable human anatomical parts, human surgery specimens or tissues.
PHARMACEUTICAL WASTE — Prescription or over-the-counter human drugs including, but not
limited to, a drug as defined by Section 109925 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act; does not
include items regulated by Federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act or Radiation Control Law.
13IOHAZARDOUS WASTE - Per California Health & Safety Code Section 117635
W19hi etives
Management of specified waste materials requires specific plan elements including identification,
containment, handling, transport, storage, treatment, disposal, emergency response and recordkeeping.
V,_ Organization and Responsibility:
Person(s) responsible for the implementation of the plan:
Nurse Epidemiologist;
Safety Officer;
Director of Environmental Services;
Facility Hazardous Chemical Coordinator
Administrative Director Pathology & Core Laboratory
Director of Pharmacy
VI. processes of the Pian
A. Medical Waste Segregation, Containment, Labeling, & Collection Procedures:
1. Medical Waste:
Medical waste (non -chemotherapeutic waste, non -pathology waste, non -pharmaceutical waste) is
contained separately from other wastes at the point of generation. In non -patient care areas, non-medical
solid waste is not to be disposed of in medical waste containment devices. When cleaning patient care
areas, Environmental Services will place all medical wastes into RED biohazard bags labeled with the
word "Biohazard." These bags are to be impervious to moisture and have strength sufficient to preclude
ripping, tearing or bursting under normal use and handling. The biohazard bag used must be constructed
of material that will pass the 165 gram dropped dart impact resistance test. as required by Standard D
1709-91 of the A.S.T.M. Documentation from the manufacturer of compliance with these minimum
construction standards will be kept on file in the Environmental Services Department. All waste placed
in a red bag will be considered medical waste. The bags will be tied to prevent spillage in the event the
bag is dumped upside down. All sharps will be placed in a sharps container labeled with the words
"SHARPS WASTE" or with the international biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard." Sharps
containers will be rigid puncture -resistant containers that when sealed are leak resistant and not able to
be reopened without great difficulty. Sharps containers shall be considered "full" when they reach 2/3
capacity or the manufacturer's full line. Lids on filled sharps containers must be snapped closed, taped,
or otherwise sealed to prevent loss of contents prior to disposal. Medical waste will be stored and
transported in rigid containers to the Biohazardous Waste Storage Area located near the shipping /
receiving area. The containers will be labeled with the words "Biohazardous Waste" or the word
"Biohazard," and the international biohazard symbol. This storage area will be locked at all times.
Access will be limited to Environmental Services and Plant Operations & Maintenance Department
Received *T imeytNo*v.
