Personnel reported a dry
blue powder on the under side of the container and railcar. This shipment was
listed as containing hazmat. Patriot environmental was dispatched to inspect
and remediate. Upon arrival, contractor performed an exterior inspection
which revealed dried blue residue on the under side of the container. An
interior inspection was also performed and that resulted in finding several 55
gallon drums of "Agritec Algaecide", a corrosive pesticide that had leaked
from caps that were loose. Contractor estimated that a total of 1/2 gallon of
product leaked over several drums. Contractor cleaned affected exterior and
interior areas of the trailer, cleaned and tightened drum caps, and sealed caps
with duct tape to prevent them from loosening during further transit.
Contractor completed remediation and departed facility at approximately
13:30.
This incident is deemed a shipper responsibility and FedEx will be
responsible for all costs associated with inspection and remediation.
In addition, please be advised that some counties in the State of California
will send BNSF Railway an invoice for their activity/handling/response
charges associated with a leaking shipment. It is not uncommon for BNSF
Railway to receive these invoices several months after incident occurrence,
2
